The Hub & Spoke Model
Make-A-Wish India's oldest chapter is located in the city of Mumbai. It granted its first wish, that of a doll and kitchen set, at the historic Nanavati hospital, which would be the first of thousands of wishes to come. Every year, the Mumbai chapter grants around 3000 wishes, of which the overwhelming majority are To Have wishes. A look into the chapter’s books shows the most coveted items being toys and battery-operated vehicles for children, and gadgets for teenagers. They also have some memorable To Meet wishes. In one case, a terminally ill child wished to meet Shah Rukh Khan, and after meeting him he successfully overcame his illness. The heart of this chapter is a strong community of 25+ volunteers across various ages and backgrounds, some of whom have stayed with the chapter for almost three decades. These volunteers work with our staff to efficiently capture the wishes of children. There are many hospitals and doctors who form an integral part of this chapter's network, all of whom play a crucial role in its operations.

Remarkably, the Kolkata chapter uniquely welcomes wish children crossing international borders from Bangladesh seeking treatment. Kolkata's advanced hospitals make it a hub for medical treatment in these areas. However, a notable challenge recounted by chapter members is connecting with these wish children, given the complexities of contacting non-Indian phone numbers. Meanwhile, the second most heard wish is to have. Interestingly, the Goa chapter has also assisted in fulfilling the wishes of kids from other chapters; for instance, in May 2023, in collaboration with Make-A-Wish Mumbai, the Goa chapter fulfilled the wishes of kids from other cities who wanted to visit Goa Beach!
