Inspired by a mention of Make-A-Wish India in a novel, Ummasalma delved into its stories and felt a profound connection to its mission. Her heart was touched, and she knew she had to be part of this cause. “My first hospital visit, where I accompanied an experienced volunteer, was overwhelming yet enlightening, filled with joy, gratitude, and hope. I was mostly an observer during that visit, but the experience left me with a lasting impression and the stories of the children and their parents etched in my heart.
The mix of emotions I felt – joy, hope, gratitude – was indescribable. Who wouldn’t want to experience something so beautiful every week?” she adds. One particular encounter stands out: while getting to know a 15-year-old boy, she was struck by his bubbly personality and positive aura. He couldn’t decide and mentioned his love for cricket, so she suggested a cricket kit for his wish. He smiled and lifted a blanket to reveal his amputated leg. That moment took her breath away. Despite losing the ability to do what he loved, he exuded strength and hope. The conversation made her reflect deeply on her own life and challenges.
Fulfilling these wishes brings indescribable joy to the children, but it also creates a ripple effect of happiness. Seeing the joy on their parents’ faces and the atmosphere of excitement and gratitude is heartwarming she says. The children, who have endured so much, finally receive something they’ve been eagerly awaiting, and it becomes a moment of pure bliss. “This journey has solidified my commitment to bringing hope and happiness to these children and their families, and I am grateful to be part of such a life-changing cause.”
