Shubhangi, a former bank employee, joined Make-A-Wish India 16 years ago with no prior knowledge of diseases but has since learned a great deal through her volunteering. She has been profoundly impacted by the resilience and optimism of the children with critical illnesses. Shubhangi recalls fulfilling the wish of a young girl suffering from severe burns who wanted new clothes and accessories; the joy on the girl’s face was unforgettable and something Shubhangi strives to see in every child. She loves visiting children in the hospital, engaging in conversations, and witnessing their eagerness to express themselves. Shubhangi has gained immense hope and strength from these young fighters, understanding that illness can affect anyone at any time, and admires their ability to embrace life with such positivity. She expresses this unique bond as a ‘friendship with pain’ where despite the children’s suffering, the fulfilment of their wishes gives them the strength to fight every day. With each passing day, Shubhangi only wishes to learn more from the children, just as she did on day one, as it is something that keeps her going.
